Do You Have the Right Motorcycle Safety Equipment?

The Arizona Department of Transportation (AZDOT) requires certain safety equipment for both the rider and the motorcycle when taking the skills test. Even if you have chosen to pass a safety course instead of taking the skills test to obtain your license, sticking to AZDOT’s safety equipment list can help you avoid injuries while on the road.

Safety Equipment for Your Person

The Arizona Department of Transportation requires everyone taking the motorcycle skills test to wear the following safety gear. This gear is also an excellent choice for any motorcyclist riding on Arizona’s roads, since it can help prevent a number of injuries.

  • Arizona law allows riders over age 18 to skip the helmet – but a helmet can reduce your risk of death in a crash by 37 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Choose a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) approved helmet that fits snugly, and always fasten it before starting the bike.
  • Gloves can protect your hands from oncoming hazards like insects or small stones. Choose gloves designed for motorcycle use, and make sure they fit well, so you can easily operate the bike’s controls.
  • AZDOT requires “long pants and a jacket or long sleeve shirt” for testing purposes, but many companies make clothing especially for bikers, using materials that can help protect against road burn. Consider several options before choosing your bike gear.
  • Footwear: Your bike boots or shoes should cover your ankle, be made of sturdy material, and allow you to use the bike’s foot controls easily. Tuck in long laces so they don’t get caught on any part of the motorcycle.
  • Eye Protection: Safety glasses, goggles, a helmet face shield, or a windshield on the bike can all help maintain your vision as you ride.

Many bikers take as much pride in their personal gear as they do in their motorcycle. Investing in high-quality gear specifically designed for motorcyclists can be a point of pride as well as a helpful safety step.

Safety Equipment for Your Motorcycle

In addition to having good safety equipment for your person, AZDOT requires basic safety equipment on your motorcycle, including:

  • AZDOT recommends using your headlight at all times, as it makes your motorcycle easier to see.
  • Your bike’s horn must be audible at least 200 feet away from the bike.
  • Rearview mirror. Arizona requires “a minimum of one” rearview mirror, but many bikers like to have more than one for a better view.
  • While Arizona law requires a minimum of one brake, many motorcycles are equipped with both hand and foot brakes. These brakes can often be added to existing bikes as well; talk to your mechanic to learn more.
  • Fuel tank cap or cover. The cap or cover should effectively close the tank.
  • Seats and footrests are required for both operators and passengers.
  • Handlebars should not require the operator to reach above their own shoulder height when they are sitting on the seat, according to AZDOT.

Check your equipment each time you ride to ensure it is in good working order.
