In a single place, you’ll be able to see how many recalls, complaints and investigations have been filed, as well as review all of the communication initiated by the manufacturer.
National Safety Council (NSC)
The goal of this organization is to eliminate preventable deaths in all areas, including on the road and in communities. This resource, provided by the National Institutes of Health, has a library of videos and tools you can use for education and enrichment on a variety of topics, not just driving. However, for the purpose of this guide, we recommend signing up for their email alert system. It’s a free subscription that sends you up-to-the-minute information as soon as it becomes available. If you want to be updated about an airbag recall for example, this subscription can provide that for you.
US Consumer Product Safety Commission
This site shares the latest news and recalls pertaining to all consumer products, including vehicles. There’s also a link to report unsafe products and view injury statistics for your car. What sets this site apart is its video library where you can see firsthand the statements made by manufacturers who have admitted liability.
US Department of Transportation (DOT)
This government site is a one-stop shop for everything related to transportation. You can use their portal to access Arizona’s state transportation department to get real-time information about highway closures, travel advisories, and new roads and routes.
In addition to accessing local news, you’ll also be able to review crash ratings for vehicles and find out if your car, truck or motorcycle has any recalls associated with it.
The Center for Auto Safety
This non-profit organization runs independently with no government affiliation. Founded in 1970 by Ralph Nader, its goal is to educate consumers about safety and quality as well as fuel economy. This group has a strong consumer advocate focus and is known for helping people return defective vehicles by lobbying for “lemon laws” in all 50 states.
