For some riders, taking a motorcycle safety course sounds like the opposite of fun. In fact, not only can the class itself be an enjoyable experience, the skills you learn there can make riding more fun – and may even save your life.
Here are several reasons to sign up for a motorcycle safety course today:
1. Help from certified professionals.
Whether you’ve been riding for years or are just beginning to enjoy time on a motorcycle, a class gives you access to professional help and advice from certified instructors. Classes in Arizona typically cover everything mentioned in the state’s manual, including handling the bike, passing, negotiating curves and railroad intersections, and group riding formations. They also teach drivers the best ways to drive defensively, including how to spot potential risks and avoid them.
Not only will your teachers cover a wide range of tools, techniques, and skills, they’re also available to give personalized advice and answer your questions. They’re a resource that is hard to find anywhere else.
2. You can skip the skills test.
Arizona’s Motorcycle Operator Manual states that riders who have passed a motorcycle safety course from an approved instructor may opt to skip both the written and the practical portions of the state’s motorcycle driving test. While you will still have to demonstrate that you meet other state requirements for a motorcycle license, such as age requirements, you won’t have to take the test itself.
By taking a class, you reduce your stress level as you seek your motorcycle license endorsement and make the entire process easier. Many other states also accept a motorcycle class instead of the test, further expanding your options if you leave Arizona.
3. You can save money.
Many motorcyclists find that they can recoup the up-front cost of a motorcycle safety course through certain benefits, such as discounts on motorcycle insurance premiums from some insurers. Many major motorcycle manufacturers and dealers also offer discounts on motorcycles, parts, and accessories if the purchaser can show that he or she has successfully passed a safety course.
In addition, some manufacturers and other organizations offer scholarships or reimbursements that cover all or part of the cost of a safety course. For instance, Honda, Kawasaki, Harley-Davidson, and Yamaha all offer reimbursement programs.
The Arizona Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation (AMSAF) also offers scholarships to riders taking a Basic Rider Training Course. Applicants must be at least 15 and a half years old, be able to ride a bicycle, and supply their own protective gear. While AMSAF does ask for donations when applying for the scholarship, the donation requested is typically much lower than the cost of the class itself.
